80th Anniversary of D-Day Landings. Southsea
To commemorate the D-Day landings in June 1944, the King & Queen, together with visiting Heads of State, government figures and D-Day veterans gathered at Southsea on 5 June 2024. It was a remarkable day, hearing the memories and accounts of veterans from all the Armed Services. Moving prayers were said, together with evocative period music and the ceremony was mirrored in Normandy. In the evening, the stunning illuminated service held at Bayeux War Cemetery was beamed across on a giant screen to Southsea, while the sky was opened up by a remarkable drone light show – a destroyer ploughed across the sky, followed by spitfires circling above. A memorable commemoration.
